MEGA-DARK BOOK BLOG TOUR - MICHAEL BROOKES: "WRITING THE CULT OF ME"

Here's my next guest on the MEGA-DARK BOOK BLOG TOUR - Michael Brookes!

Writing The Cult of Me

‘The Cult of Me’ was my debut novel, I’ve written a few more since then, but this will always be the novel that marked my change from dabbling with writing to an author wanting to share my work with the public. I’m glad I made the change, I might not have hit the bestsellers lists yet, but I have received some great reviews. The thought that people are enjoying what I’ve written is a pleasing one, I still experience a thrill when I receive another good review.
So  what inspired me to write ‘The Cult of Me’?
‘The Cult of Me’ is the first book in ‘The Third Path’ trilogy. The trilogy is inspired from my love for John Milton’s ‘Paradise Lost’. The story deals with the classic battle between Heaven and Hell (although it’s not as clear cut as it seems), however I wanted to examine a third option. That required a human character, one of sufficient strength to be able to stand up to the major powers.
In creating that character I realised that there was a story to be told in its own right. The character remains nameless throughout the story (although you will get to find out who he is in the final book which is due for release next year). He’s also by any definition an evil man. That was a deliberate choice, I enjoy the contradiction of having a bad man doing good things for the wrong reasons.

I’ll admit that writing evil characters is a lot of fun and I also wanted him to highlight the eternal war, which isn’t as clear cut as a battle between good and evil.

He has a special ability, he can invade people’s minds, read their thoughts and control their actions. He grows up a monster, with no boundaries or control. It is this man that the future of humanity rests.

I’ve had a lot of fun writing about this character and I hope you have as much fun reading his story.

The Cult of Me

The first book in ‘The Third Path’ trilogy.

For too long he dwelt apart, watched those who passed him by. With his unique abilities he entered minds and inflicted terrible suffering upon them. They didn't even know who he was. The game has lasted for years, but now the game has become stale. On an impulse he decides to make a final and very public last stand. After surrendering himself to the police he enacts his plan to seize the prison for his final bloody act.

There he discovers that he's not as unique as he once thought.
